Bombshell lipsense. Bombshell blonde beer. "Bombshell" has a literate, fast-moving and yet profound script and an all-star cast acting out a morality tale that concerns every thinking American. It"s a terrific movie. This movie is so good it actually surprised me. It didn"t fall into the predictable traps I expected.
"Bombshell" is about Roger Ailes" sexual harassment of female talent at FOX news. Ailes" behavior is depicted as utterly repugnant. John Lithgow"s Ailes is a disgusting, rotting hulk of a man, obese, bald, flabby, and reliant on a walker.
In a cringe-inducing scene, Ailes, a putrescent blob in a big chair, orders Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie) a naïve true-believer in FOX News, to lift her skirt higher so he can see her legs. Pospisil is wearing a miniskirt. She has to lift her skirt up over her underpants. As she does so, Ailes becomes aroused. The look on Kayla"s face tells us that she is realizing what"s going on, she recognizes that she"s doing this for a job in TV, and she suddenly hates herself and everything that is happening.
But "Bombshell" takes a while to get to that scene. Before that scene, Ailes is shown as a stalwart support to female star Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron. He gives Kelly good advice and she is grateful to him. "Bombshell" doesn"t demonize Ailes. Ailes is a fully rounded character. Surprising.
Megyn Kelly, similarly, is complex. She is a protagonist, but she"s not perfect. When Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) speaks out about her sexual harassment, she hopes for support from other women at FOX. Support is slow to come. Though Ailes had harassed Kelly years before, Kelly is slow to come forward. She doesn"t want to hurt her career, not just for her own sake, but for the sake of her family and her show"s producers.
For a movie that moves this quickly to be so complex is a rare feat. The script was co-written by Charles Randolph, who won the Academy Award for co-writing "The Big Short" script. The film is co-written and directed by Jay Roach, who has received a slew of awards and nominations.
The cast just never stops. Just when you think you"re already awash in big names giving award-worthy performances, Alison Janney pops up as Susan Estrich, Roger Ailes" attorney, and Malcolm McDowell walks in as Rupert Murdoch. Kate McKinnon shines in a small role. Actors depicting Bill O"Reilly, Sean Hannity, Geraldo Rivera, Harris Faulkner, Judge Jeannine Pirro and Kimberly Guilfoyle accessorize the sidelines.
The Kayla Pospisil character is a fictionalized composite of various accounts of how Ailes would sexually harass women. She is clearly young, naïve, and ambitious. She comes from an Evangelical family that worships FOX news and all it stands for. She wears a cross around her neck. She"s also a lesbian. She"s the only woman actually depicted giving in to Ailes" perversions.
Is the Kayla character a Christophobic one? In creating her, are script-writers Jay Roach and Charles Randolph implying that FOX news viewers are hypocrites? After all, Kayla is a lesbian but has taken sides with folks who condemn lesbians. Evangelicals, of course, value sexual purity, and she is the only female character depicted actually selling her body for airtime.
Or, are the scriptwriters not mocking FOX viewers, but highlighting how FOX viewers, often poor and working class, are cheated, duped, used and discarded - metaphorically f. by men like Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes, and Donald Trump? Men who cajole these masses into betraying the ideals represented by the crosses worn around their necks? I don"t know the answer to that.

I need more Alice wu films in my life. This movie is awful on so many levels that I created an IMBD account just to rate it. Save yourself the time and don"t watch it (and full disclosure I"ll have spoilers in this review so if you want to know why its horrible just continue straight ahead and save yourself the misery of actually watching it.
First and foremost, kids don"t go out on dates with someone you know has a crush on you when you"re already in a relationship. That"s one of the most obvious things this movie doesn"t get right and instead chooses to gloss over. Aster never breaks up with her boyfriend but then goes on dates with a guy she knows likes her? And to put the cherry on top, she kisses him? That is the definition of cheating, something the writers obviously had no problems with and chose not to address. Not to mention after all that she just agrees to marry the guy she"s been cheating on the entire time, as if it was the most natural thing to do. She"s not likeable. She"s not relatable. She"s just a mess who can"t properly handle relationships apparently.
Then there"s Paul and Ellie. Paul began as a likeable character until he makes it clear through the movie that he has no idea what consent is. Again, life advice for those that are reading this, don"t kiss people out of nowhere. A LOOK. does not equal consent. And where Ellie is concerned, she"s a mess from the very beginning, but got significantly less likeable when she decided that stalking people you like is okay. Since the writers obviously don"t care enough to say it, I will. DON"T STALK PEOPLE. Oh, and my favorite part of the movie is how Paul had his moment of homophobia and then 2 scenes later (without us knowing anything) he was all of the sudden friends with Ellie again.
The only good things about this movie were Ellie"s dad and her English teacher. I could have spent the entire movie watching Ellie"s dad make dumplings and it probably would have wasted less of my braincells than trying to sit through this awful plot.

This is one of the BEST movies Ive seen in SUCH a long time. It"s just amazing different and sweet story. After watching it you will feel fresh, lighthearted and positive. Our cinema has a unique player which has no ads, and has a great download speed of movies. It was so delightful chatting with Alice Wu about her writing and directing process! Its always fun to hear insights straight from the creators themselves.

 

You"re the only person who write that thing, so write that thing. Don"t write the thing that somebody else could write. Alice Wu is such a brilliant writer and director. The story is unique but relatable (if that makes sense lol.

 

And for this. she deserves her own masterclass lol.
Most people think they will be happy and complete when they find their other half but I tend to disagree. First of all, you are already whole and when you find that special someone, he/she will be able to complement or add more value to your existence. No one should ever feel they are broken or not complete unless they find someone. Self-actualization, self-love and self-affirmation has to be front and center with you before you try to find someone. When you are ready, your self confidence will give off an aura that will enable that someone to see you as a suitable partner. You are you and no one will be able to complete you. Once you are self-evolved you will walk through this life upright and you will not need people as crutches. Once you find that special someone, he/she will walk along beside and enable all the good qualities you already have to make them shine even more. Not all people you meet will help lift you up or make you shine even more because those are the downers in life. They want to pull you down to their level because they have low self-worth and can not make improvements on themselves. Leave them behind and make room for people that will complement you and help you succeed in all aspect of life.
